Type Shield volcano

The Mount laundry is a dormant or extinct shield volcano in Marie Byrd Land in Antarctica .

The massive and towering mountain lies exactly southwest of Mount Sidley and marks the southern end of the Executive Committee Range . The mountain is almost completely covered with snow, only on the southern and southwestern slopes single rocks protrude from the snow masses.

The shield volcano was formed during the last million years on the southwestern edge of the 10 km wide caldera of Chang Peak , another 1.6 million year old volcano. Mount Waesche could have been volcanically active into the Holocene ; it is believed to be a possible source of ash layers deposited in the ice near Byrd Station over the past 30,000 years . Recent research indicates persistent magmatic activity underground south of Mount Waesche, suggesting that volcanism in this region is by no means extinct.

The mountain was discovered during the United States Antarctic Service Expedition (1939–1941) on December 15, 1940 and named after the US Coast Guard Admiral Russell R. Waesche, a member of the Executive Committee of the United States Antarctic Service .
