The Mountain Zebra National Park (German: Bergzebra National Park , English Mountain Zebra National Park ) is located 235 km north of Port Elizabeth , near the South African city of Cradock . It was established as a sanctuary for the Cape Mountain Zebra, a subspecies of the Mountain Zebra .
The Cape Mountain Zebra is one of the rarest larger mammals. It differs from other zebra species, among other things, by its shorter mane and its life in close family groups. The protection in this reserve is so successful that a larger population is now thriving here and zebra families have been transferred to other game reserves.
fauna
In April 2013, lions were released into the park that had been exterminated in the area about 130 years earlier. A predator-proof fence that borders the national park has been preventing predators from reaching adjacent settlement land since 2007. In addition to the Cape mountain zebra, a whole range of antelopes , plains zebras , Cape buffalo , black rhinos , brown hyenas , aardvark , bear baboons , vervet monkeys , bush pigs and some of the African cats can be observed here. The largest of these are cheetahs and lions, which have been reintroduced here. Caracals can also be seen here . Among the antelope species, the eland is the largest. There are also greater kudu , mountain reedbuck , South African gauntlet, South African hartebeest , wildebeest , blessbok , springbok , crown duiker , ibex , klipspringer and roe deer antelope .
Because of the aggressive buffalo, hiking in this area has now been banned. On the other hand, this game reserve with its low undergrowth offers the advantage that the animals can be observed particularly well from the car.
