The Kalahari Gemsbok National Park ( English Kalahari Gemsbok National Park ) is a 10,000 square kilometer large national park , in the district ZF Mgcawu District Municipality , in the province of Northern Cape in South Africa , about 260 kilometers north of the city of Upington .
Established in 1931, the park is one of the largest protected ecosystems in southern Africa. Since the Kalahari Gemsbok National Park directly to the in Botswana situated Gemsbok National Park adjacent and now with this for cross-border Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park was united, here is extensive, seasonal animal migrations are possible. A total of 42,000 km² were under nature protection. The border crossing to Namibia near Mata-Mata, which was closed for years , has been reopened since October 2007.
The landscape is extremely arid. Large areas of the park seem to consist only of sand dunes. The herds of animals are concentrated in the normally dry river beds of Auob and Nossob. There are a number of watering holes here that were dug when British-South African soldiers marched against the German protection forces in 1915 . Wind pumps installed at that time still draw up groundwater today, so that a number of South African animals can be observed very well here. You can see u. a. Springbok , gourmets , wildebeest , hartebeest and eland . About 250 lions live in the park and focus on hunting at the watering holes at night. You can also see spoonhounds , spotted hyena and crown duiker . In addition, around 30 giraffes live in the park and have been relocated here.
