The Bontebok National Park ( English Bontebok National Park ) is located near the town of Swellendam in the Overberg District , Western Cape Province in South Africa . The distance to Cape Town and George is 240 kilometers each.

The 1931 originally to protect the last 30 wild Bontebok -Antilopen ( Damaliscus pygargus founded) National Park and covers only an area of about 20 square kilometers, making it the smallest of the South African National Parks. Today, the number of Buntbock is kept at 200, since a larger number is ecologically unacceptable here. You can drive through the national park with your own car and today it is also home to a number of other antelope species . A few years ago the rare Cape Mountain Zebra was also introduced to the park; 22 zebras currently live there.

The climate is mild; the annual rainfall is about 500 mm.

In the center of the park, near the Breede River , is the "Restcamp" Lang Elsies's Kraal (named after a Khoi-Khoi chief's wife who lived here between 1734 and 1800). From the park you have a good view of the Langeberg to the north .

Buntbock

In addition to the colored goats and mountain zebra numerous live another mammal species in the park, including aardwolf , genet , golden moles , fukomys , honey badgers , mongoose , Kapfüchse , Cape Greis goats , African clawless otter , caracal , hyrax , duiker , red hartebeest , bat-eared foxes , mongoose , Rehantilopen , porcupines , Ibexes and Zorillas .

The park is home have been sighted over 200 species of birds, Stanley Bustard ( Neotis denami ), blue crane , spur-winged goose , Secretary ( Sagittarius serpentarius ), Black Korhaan , sunbirds and Würgerschnäpper . There are also three species of turtles, the leopard tortoise ( Geochelone pardalis ), the African Serrated tortoise ( Chersina angulata ) and the Flachschildkröte ( Homopus arealatus )

The park is also home to eleven species of frogs, the most common of which is Bufo rangeri .
