Movimiento Quinta República ( MVR for short , German  Movement for a Fifth Republic ) was a left-wing party in Venezuela . It emerged in 1997 from the Movimiento Bolivariano Revolucionario 200 movement . The aim was to establish a political platform to support Hugo Chávez 's candidacy for the 1998 presidential election, which he finally won. According to Venezuelan law, political parties were not allowed to name themselves after the national hero Simón Bolívar . In the election to the National Assembly that year, the party received 76 out of 165 seats. The party declared itself to be the voice of the poor. Together with the Patria Para Todos (PPT) and smaller parties, the MVR formed the left-wing national alliance Polo Patriótico .

In October 2007 the MVR went into the newly founded United Socialist Party of Venezuela (PSUV). In 2011, the ruling party alliance under the leadership of Chávez was expanded into the “ Gran Polo Patriótico ” and continues to be the dominant political force in Venezuela.

Several prominent former MVR representatives left their former party comrades in the course of Chávez's reign and after the controversial (initially provisional) takeover of power by Nicolás Maduro in March 2013, went into the opposition and supported the candidate Henrique in the 2012 and 2013 presidential election campaigns Capriles . They included the former general and defense minister Raúl Baduel , MVR co-founder and former MP Ernesto Alvarenga , the former president of the MVR Luis Alfonso Dávila and the former chairman of the trade union organization of the MVR, Froilán Barrios .
