Mr. Crowley is a metal song from 1980 written by Ozzy Osbourne , Randy Rhoads, and Bob Daisley . The piece was first released on Ozzy Osbourne's album Blizzard of Ozz on September 20, 1980 and was released as a single a little later . There are also numerous other releases of the song on EPs and as a live version. The text is about the British occultist Aleister Crowley .

Origin and Music

The song was created during the recording sessions for the album Blizzard of Ozz . Osbourne had read books about Crowley and had wanted to write a song about him for a long time. During the studio stay, a set of Crowley-designed tarot cards was lying around in the studio, which Osbourne took as an opportunity to write the piece. The self-proclaimed "Prince of Darkness" was no longer interested in black magic at that time , so the song is about Crowley, but cannot be regarded as a song of praise to him. Rather, the text has an accusatory undertone.

Mr. Crowley begins with an organ-like keyboard part and is characterized by Rhoad's baroque-influenced guitar playing and Osbourne's melancholy vocals. The idea for the keyboard intro came about while a keyboardist who was no longer known by name was playing. The band adapted the auditioned theme for the intro, but in Bob Daisley's opinion the theme was changed so much that there is no copyright issue.

The single released in November 1980 by Mr. Cowley reached number 46 on the British charts.
