Mr. Woodland (* 1981 in Dachau , actually Daniel Westermeier ) is a German urban artist and graphic designer from Erding .

Career

Westermeier grew up as the older of two children in Erding. Fascinated by the colorful pictures on the train line and the hip-hop culture, he painted his first graffiti in 1993 at the age of 12 at the Herzog-Tassilo-Realschule in Erding. At that time he used the pseudonym MONO . In 2004, through a joke dedicated to his stature, he adopted the pseudonym Woodland . The addition Mister, or Mr. for short, followed about two months later.

He studied graphic design from 2012 to 2014 in Munich, after having worked as a trained retail salesman for nine years, but never saw any point in it. He has been working as a freelance artist worldwide since 2014.

style

His style is a mixture of realistically painted figures in combination with graphic elements and fragments. His works always tell a story or convey a message, which often arises from his carefully chosen colors.

His pictures are mostly kept in dark tones, which creates a lot of tension. He likes to deal with non-typical graffiti motifs and tries to differentiate himself from the classic mainstream of graffiti . He draws his inspiration from classical painting, nature and graphic design.

Technically, he works with a brush, paint roller and spray can.

Projects

  • Westend Stories - In 2014, Mr. Woodland organized and curated a one-month open-air gallery in the Westend district of Munich , financed by HBB (Hanseatische Betreuungs- und Beteiligungsgesellschaft mbH), on over 1,200 square meters at the old XXXLutz building, to which he invited international artists. It was considered one of the largest open-air galleries in Bavaria.
  • Artding - from June 10 to June 16, 2019, Mr. Woodland organized and curated the Mural Art Festival Artding in Erding, which was the first of its kind. His goal was to create a free outdoor gallery that is open 365 days a year. Other artists included TELMO MIEL (Netherlands), ZOER (France), GEORGIA HILL (Australia) and the ATE crew (Germany). The project was financed and supported by the city of Erding and the social urban development subsidy. The festival is to take place annually with different artists.
