Mrtvý luh (German Dead Au , also Filzau ) is a moor at the confluence of the Warm and Cold Vltava near the village of Chlum near Volary in the Bohemian Forest .

geography

The alluvial peat bog lies at an altitude of 740 m, its area is 394 ha. It has an average depth of 3.9 m, in places up to 7.5 m. With an estimated volume of 15.3 million m³, it is the largest bog in the Bohemian Forest. Due to the rural location is the average temperature of only 4 ° C . In Mrtvý luh the Volarský potok flows into the Warm Vltava and the Hučina into the Cold Vltava. West of Chlum, the warm and cold Vltava finally unite to form the Vltava.

fauna and Flora

The wide area of the moor is dominated by so-called tree skeletons, dead trees, some of which are 300 years old. Their roots were damaged by an underground peat fire, so that they died. Bleached by the sun, they look like bony, bizarre structures in the middle of the barren moorland.

At home in the moor are, among others, the ringed mother-of-pearl butterfly , high-moor mother-of-pearl butterfly and numerous other species of interest for entomology , which are actually only native to the Alpine region or the tundra . The adder and the black grouse are mainly found in the drier areas of the moor. Bitter clover and broad-leaved orchid can also be found in the nature reserve , as well as the round-leaved sundew . The edges of the moor are overgrown with moor birches and dwarf pines .

history

Mrtvý luh has been under nature protection since 1948 and was incorporated into the Šumava Protected Landscape Area in 1969 and later into the National Park (Zone I) established in 1991. It is not accessible, but the moor can only be crossed by boat on the Vltava during the water sports season.
