Big cities Pietermaritzburg

The Msunduzi (also: Umsunduzi , English Dusi ) is a river in the South African province of KwaZulu-Natal . It is a tributary of the Mngeni River . The name Msunduzi comes from the Zulu language . The Msunduzi flows through the center of the provincial capital Pietermaritzburg and is also the namesake of the municipality Msunduzi , in which the city is located.

Sports

Sections of the river are dammed by several weirs and are used for rowing and paddling exercises . The dammed part of the river is called Camp's Drift . There are plans to expand Camp's Drift into an official sports and office complex that will also include an Olympic-sized canoe slalom course .

Dusi Canoe Marathon

The Dusi Canoe Marathon is held annually Canoe Marathon from Pietermaritzburg to Durban . It starts on Msunduzi and ends on Mngeni. About 2000 paddlers come to the race. The South African mass media also reported on the competition.

Water quality

In the area around Pietermaritzburg, the river repeatedly contains large amounts of E. coli bacteria , up to 50,000 per 100 milliliters. As a result, many water sports enthusiasts experience health problems (according to a survey, 64 percent). Problems include diarrhea (colloquially known as Dusi guts ), but also eye and ear infections and septic cuts. The poor water quality is believed to be due to the water drainage system near the river, which overflows during heavy rainfall, and from illegal rubbish dumps. These health risks threaten the annual canoe marathon.

A non-governmental organization, the Duzi-Umgeni Conservation Trust (DUCT) , was set up to coordinate projects to improve water quality and preserve the areas around the river. (It also provided the data listed above.) On the advice of the foundation, the district administration allocated ten million rand in 2006 to improve the sewage system. DUCT is also testing garbage nets to collect and clear away illegally dumped garbage.
