Mubarak Bala

Mubarak Bala (born July 11, 1984 in Kano ) is a Nigerian human rights activist and civil rights activist .

First arrest in 2014

Mubarak Bala is a graduate chemist and has an MA in “International Affairs and Diplomacy” from Ahmadu Bello University in Zaria . Bala experienced a religious school education. Nevertheless, he renounced Islam in 2014 . His family then arranged for him to be admitted to a mental health facility. After protests, he was released from the clinic, but was subsequently held in police custody .

Arrested April 2020

Despite the reprisals , Mubarak Bala decided to stay in Nigeria and took over the chairmanship of the Humanist Society of Northern Nigeria . In April 2020 he was accused of blasphemy and arrested in Kaduna over a Facebook post . He has since been held without charge. He is probably currently being held captive in Kano . There he has to fear Islamic Sharia law. Several death threats have also been made against him.  

International protest

International protest is rising against the arrest of Mubarak Bala . In a letter to the Nigerian government, eleven representatives of the United Nations express their deep concern and concern at the serious violations of international law and the rule of law in the Mubarak Balas case. Mubarak Bala faces the death penalty for his atheist beliefs . The local Kano Police Department has denied Mubarak Bala access to legal counsel. The Nigerian writer and Nobel Prize winner Wole Soyinka addressed Mubarak Bala himself in an appeal on the occasion of the 100th day of imprisonment: “You have opposed the tide of religious imperialism. You fought for all of humanity to make a better, more just world possible for all. You did not try to appease the keepers of the Grail. You didn't bow to the pressure to worship their invisible deities. "
