Mucken (card game)

Bavarian sheet

Mucken is a card game derived from the Schafkopf . In contrast to the Schafkopf, two players always play together as a pair when playing Mucken; no solos or call games are played. Mucken is mainly played in (north-east) Upper Franconia . Mucken is part of the Franconian pub culture. The exact rules are subject to regional customs.

Mucken is played with the short card of the Bavarian or Franconian leaf (with 24 cards). The long sheet of 32 cards is also rarely used.

goal of the game

The aim of the game is to achieve a certain number of points by stabbing or pulling , just like in Schafkopf . Normally a game is considered won by the players' party with 61 points ( eyes ) and won with Schneider with 91 eyes ; if all six (or eight) tricks are taken, the game is won by Black (also tout or uprising ). With 31 points, a player's party is tailor-free . In a game that is popular with tailors , the non-player side suffices with 30 points, and in a game that is announced for black, a single trick (regardless of the number of points won) is enough to win.

Course of the game

Mix, take off and deal

The dealer shuffles the cards, let the player sitting to his right, stand out , and are then subsequently clockwise twice three cards, and he with the player to the left is (= forehand starts or first man), which also comes out , that is, the opening player is. The role of the giver changes clockwise; four games make up a round .

When withdrawing at least three cards should be withdrawn or remain in place; Taking this rule into account, you can withdraw up to 3 times.

Instead of taking off, you can also knock ; in this case, the withdrawing player may instruct the dealer to deal the cards differently than usual - for example, all six instead of 2 times 3, counterclockwise , etc.

The rules for taking off, knocking and dealing the cards are subject to strong regional differences, especially in music tournaments, sometimes stricter rules apply, such as no knocking, always and only withdraw at least three cards once and always deal two times three cards.

Before the game actually begins, the game is announced to determine who is the player and which game variant is being played. The player who leads the game first has the option to either announce a game ( I would play ) or pass ( I am gone / further ). Then the right to announce the game changes to the next player in clockwise order, and so on, until the dealer is asked at the end.

If a game has been announced, the following players may still have the opportunity to announce a higher value game ( I also play ) and thus take over the game; the first player can now announce a higher value game in turn, whereby the game would fall back to him. In the case of games of equal value, the seating arrangement decides.

The ranking of the individual games is determined before the start of the game. A common variant is shown in the adjacent table. Instead of treating the vulture more highly than the wenz, this is often done the other way around. Occasionally only Wenz and Muck are played.

Kontra, Re, Bock / Sup and Hirsch

Depending on the agreement, before or when the first card is played, a representative of the non-player party can give a counter if he thinks that the player party cannot win the game. Contra doubles the value of the game.

The usual practice with Kontra is that the game is taken over by the non-player party, ie they now need 61 eyes to win - Kontra takes over.

The contra can be answered by the player or his partner with Re (tour) (counter-attack), whereby the play value doubles again, which in turn can be answered by the further doubles Sup and Hirsch.

If no player is found

If no player announces a game, there are various options that must be agreed before the game:

  • it is thrown together , that is, it is shuffled again (by the next dealer clockwise) and dispensed. Often the following game (and occasionally the whole following round) then becomes a buck game , that is, the tariffs are doubled
  • Another variant is playing a junk
  • Sometimes a must-play is also used, that is, the owner of the old man (meaning the acorn-upper, i.e. the highest trump) has to announce a game
  • Another possibility is to complain about a point. B. the team that has the old one has to reach 61 points. If you complain about a point, you only get one point, even if the game is won by Schneider or black.

Stitches

When the game is announced, the opening player (to the left of the dealer) plays the first card; then give the players one after another in a clockwise maps to . As soon as there are four cards on the table, it is decided to which player the trick belongs. This takes the trick cards and plays the next card; the rest of the process is analogous until all 24 cards, corresponding to 6 tricks, have been played (or 8 tricks for the long hand).

Depending on the type of the respectively played card differentiates color and stocking stitches . To get to the trick, either a higher value picture of the same suit or a trump must be added. If a trump is already in the trick, it can only be won with a higher trump. Overstepping with a higher suit or trump card is not compulsory (no compulsory trick ), but if a suit is played, all players must admit cards of the same suit; if a trump is played, the corresponding trump must be added ( duty to operate ). If a player does not have the suit played, he can either trump with trumps or discard any color card of his choice (no trump requirement ).

Incorrect operation, reproach or verbal influence on the game generally results in the loss of the game. If a trick has not yet been completed (i.e. the cards are still open on the table), each player has the right to view the previous trick upon request.

After the game, the cards won are counted. The point values of the cards are the same as in the Schafkopf. For each color there are 6 cards (a total of 24) with values (eyes) on the left. The cards of each color add up to 30 eyes, so a total of 120 eyes are to be distributed.

Winning Conditions

During the game announcement it is determined how many eyes the game maker has to close to win the game (see also Schneider and Tout )

Rating

game Rating
Normal game 2
Normal game (won with Schneider) 3

Tout game 10

In contrast to the Schafkopf, points are not credited or deducted from each player, but a previously defined point limit (usually 21, less often 31) applies before the opposing team. Points are only credited to the winning team, without taking points from the losing team. Whichever team reaches the goal first wins the entire round.

Kontra, Re, Sup and Hirsch each double the score for the game. Even after a junk or throwing in and re-handing cards, the rating is often doubled.

Regionally, a round is also referred to as a "bobbl". The “bobbl” (a thick point) is drawn behind the score for the losing team, ie it “gets” the bobbl while the other team “wins” the bobbl. Sometimes the bobbl is expanded to a double bobbl when losing to zero, which is then graphically represented as “glasses” (with or without effect on the rating).

Sometimes a "hangover" is played as a round. This then consists of two or three bobsleighs: To win the hanger, two bobsleighs must be won. If one wins and one loses, there is the third "decision" -bobbl.

The games

Which games and in which order the games are played will be agreed between the players before the start of the game.

The biggest difference between Schafkopf and Mucken is that the games are always played as a team. Therefore, no solos or call games can be played.

The players sitting diagonally opposite each other always play together in a team. In a game with 6 players, the players play in a "V" shape with each other, so that there are never two players from the same team sitting next to each other.

The Wenz only has four trumps, namely the Unter or Wenzen in the order of acorn, grass / green, heart and bells. The waiter is ranked in the colors between king and nine, hearts are the normal color.

The Muck corresponds to a heart solo in the Schafkopf , with the difference that it is played in a team. Here upper, lower and all heart cards are trumps.

Special forms

Junk

The junk is a variation of the game when no game announcement has taken place (often the last man has the opportunity to announce junk if the players in front of him are all gone).

The same trump cards apply as with the Muck, but the aim is to be as few eyes as possible. The team with the most eyes loses.

If the teams have the same number, the team with the most tricks loses. If the number of tricks is also the same, the team with the most trumps loses; if this number is also the same, the team with the higher trump loses. Special rules adopted from Skat are the walk-through (i.e. one player takes all the tricks and wins the game)

When it comes to junk, there is often a compulsion to stab. H. a player who has the choice z. B. Admitting a wrong color or tripping with a trump must do this.

The junk is often scored twice.

Must-play game

The must-play (competitive game) is a common variant in the event that all four players pass. In this case , the owner of a specific card (almost always the acorn-top) must play.

The must-play game has a few peculiarities: The game is already considered to have been won by the players with 60 points and as a tailor -free game with 30 points (accordingly, with 90 points as won with tailor). In addition, no contra may be given.

Schneider, Tout and you

The "Schneider" games are higher quality forms of the standard games. "Tout" - or "Aufstand" - or also "Black" games are more valuable than Schneider games. The words "Tout" (French everything ) and "Du" are used synonymously, since the (incorrect) pronunciation of "Tout" in Bavaria / Franconia sounds like "Du".

For example, a player who wants to play a Wenz, but when someone else has announced a vulture, can play a Schneiderwenz. If the other player now also raises a tailor's vulture, the player can play a Wenz Tout.

In the tailor-made games, the game maker announces that the opposing party will not become “tailor-free”, ie will receive a maximum of 30 points.

In the tout games, the announcer announces that his team will take all the tricks. It should be noted that theoretically there can also be a trick with four nines that does not contain any points, but is still a trick. If the opposing team took that trick, the tout game would be lost.

Regionally, there is still a distinction between “you”: This is the highest value game in Mucken, which comes about when a player receives all four upper and the two highest lower. The origin of the name is unclear, it is probably a folk etymological analogy to Tout ("you"). It is the only game that does not have to be played in accordance with the rules and in which the playing cards are placed on the table immediately after being dealt. It is a rare occurrence for a seizure to happen. In many Bavarian taverns this is honored by the custom of not using the corresponding cards anymore, but framing them and hanging them on the wall with the date and the player's name.

There are also regional differences here. If z. B. "Wenz over Muck" is played, a "Muck Tout" is lower than a "Wenz Tout", so there is no "You" or a corresponding rule.

Music tournaments

Regional music tournaments are very popular. They are held full-evening, for example by clubs. The course of such a tournament varies similarly to the rules. Often fixed pairs are registered who play together for the entire tournament and then share a placement. Alternatively, individual players can be drawn against each other in each round.

Usually a defined number of rounds is played, which in turn consist of a defined number of bobsleds . In some cases, as with the Preisschafkopf, a defined number of games and no bobbl are played per round.

Creation of the ranking list

Depending on the type of tournament, different counting methods are used.

If a tournament is played with Bobbln, then counting according to Bobbln and goals is a good idea: The ranking list is first sorted according to the number of Bobbls won (the more, the better; whoever “got” the Bobbl has lost it!) . Usually there are many pairs or players who have won the same number of Bobbls. Therefore, in the case of a tie for bobbles, the points that the respective pair has achieved in their lost bobbles are used for further differentiation (so-called goals scored , the more, the better). If both bobblers and goals are the same, the last thing that can be done is to compare the points that the opponents have achieved in the won bobbles of the respective team ( opposing goals scored , the fewer the better).

If no bobbl are played, but only a defined number of games, the “plus” or “plus-minus” method can be used to count. With "Plus" the winners receive the points they have achieved (and the losers none), with "Plus-Minus" each team receives the points achieved minus the points of the opponents. It should be noted here that winning the bobbln is not counted in either method: The pair or the player who has won the most bobbls does not necessarily win, or the pair or the player with the fewest bobbls does not necessarily lose . Therefore, both methods are rather poorly suited for tournaments in which bobbl are played.

Awarding

Most of the time, non-cash prizes are awarded, and there are sometimes cash prizes to be won for the first places. Traditionally, the last or penultimate seat is endowed with a press bag or a crate of beer.
