Mudbox is a 3D graphics software from the former company Skymatter, which was purchased on August 6, 2007 by the company Autodesk and incorporated into its Media & Entertainment division.
The sculpting tool is primarily used for organic models. Mudbox 3D fits into the production pipeline as a pure sculpting tool.
Mudbox 3D saves models in its own file format (.mud). There are export and import options through the use of 3ds, obj, fact, dxf, rib, and pov files.
With Mudbox it is possible to create organic models in the multimillion polygonal area. This means that realistic structures, such as uneven skin, can be created using real 3D coordinates. In addition to the similarly oriented ZBrush , Mudbox joins the production pipeline as a special application for realistic surfaces in character creation .
Functions V 1.0
- Sculpting of 3D polygon objects
- Use up to 16 million polygons
- Sculpting via 3D tools as well as via perpectives
- Export of displacement and normal maps for further use of the object in other programs.
Use in the production pipeline
Due to the different requirements in animation, print and CAD, more and more specialized tools are being integrated into the workflow within an agency. A product such as Maya , Softimage XSI or LightWave 3D is often used as the basis . Special products such as ZBrush , 3D-Brush , Silo 3D or Mudbox complement the functions of the main products in the modeling and texturing area.
Versions
The current version is Mudbox 2018. Since the 2011 version, members of the Autodesk Education Community have had the opportunity to download an eleven-month trial version. The full version of the program is free for schoolchildren and students for three years.
