Mudchute is a Docklands Light Railway (DLR) station in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets . It is in the Travelcard tariff zone 2 on the Isle of Dogs , on East Ferry Road in the Cubitt Town district .

history

The name of the station can be roughly translated as "mud slide". This term refers to an overburden dump that was created when the docks were built in the 1840s. The excavated material as well as the silt from the harbor basins and shipping lanes were deposited centrally here. Over time, a hilly landscape emerged, which developed into a local recreation area.

The station was opened on August 31, 1987, together with the DLR basic network. From February 10 to April 16, 1996, the route south of Heron Quays was closed due to an IRA attack at the South Quay station . After the construction of the extension under the Thames towards Lewisham had started, the station located on a viaduct had to be relocated. It was closed on January 8, 1999 and replaced by a new system. This is located in a cut just before the tunnel entrance and was opened on November 20, 1999, together with the section between Crossharbour and Lewisham.

Originally the station should have been called Millwall Dock . But when the DLR was built, Millwall FC , whose stadium is on the other side of the river, was particularly hard hit by hooligan incidents. As it was feared that the intended name could attract undesirable and violent people, Mudchute was chosen.
