Island Gardens is a Docklands Light Railway (DLR) station in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets . It is in the Travelcard tariff zone 2 on the southern tip of the Isle of Dogs , on Manchester Road in the Cubitt Town district . It is one of three DLR underground stations.

The entrance building is built in such a way that natural daylight penetrates down to the platform. The station is named after Island Gardens , a public park in the neighborhood. From there, you can see the famous landmarks across the Thames , including Greenwich Park and the National Maritime Museum . A free alternative to getting across to Greenwich is the Greenwich Pedestrian Tunnel, opened in 1902 .

history

The original terminus was on a viaduct

The original station opened on August 31, 1987 and was then the southern terminus of the DLR basic network. It was built on the site of the former North Greenwich railway station . This train station (not to be confused with the underground station of the same name ) was the southern terminus of the Millwall Extension Railway from July 29, 1872 to May 4, 1926 .

The DLR station was a little closer to the river bank than it is today and consisted of two platforms on a viaduct . From February 9 to April 16, 1996, the route south of Heron Quays was closed due to an IRA attack in the South Quay station . After the construction of the extension under the Thames towards Lewisham had started, the station had to be relocated. It was closed on January 8, 1999 and replaced by the new underground facility, which opened on November 20, 1999, along with the section between Crossharbour and Lewisham. The original station and the southern end of the viaduct have been demolished.
