Muhibbe Darga

Muhibbe Darga (born June 13, 1921 in Istanbul ; † March 6, 2018 there ) was a Turkish archaeologist and full professor at Istanbul University .

Life

Darga was the granddaughter of Sultan Abdülhamid's chamberlain Darugazade Mehmet Emin Bey, who was also known as the poet and translator of Jules Verne's novels from French to Turkish.

Darga was brought up by French governesses and grew up in an educated and cosmopolitan household. She attended schools in Paris and Istanbul. Her father Ahmet Sait was a doctor and because of his obligations, the family traveled extensively through Anatolia in the 1930s.

Darga studied the early 1940s at the University of Istanbul Hittitology at Arif Müfid Mansel and Helmuth Theodor Bossert and ended 1943 successfully their studies. After Bossert's discovery of Karatepe-Arslantaş , Darga became his assistant at the Institute for Ancient Languages ​​and Cultures of Asia Minor in the late 1940s. She received her doctorate in 1947. After research stays in Germany and France, Darga concentrated on philology and did research on Hittite hieroglyphs and the Sidetic language . She also completed her habilitation. In her book Women in Anatolia she examined the situation of women in her country and in Hittite art. She also worked regularly in schools in Anatolia between 1950 and 1959, teaching history, art history and French. In 1973 she became a full professor at Istanbul University .

After participating in several excavations in the 1970s, she became archaeologist in Şemsiyetepe in southeastern Turkey. After working there for more than ten years, she worked in the ancient Phrygian-Hittite city of Dorylaion near Eskişehir in Central Anatolia.

From 1983 she headed the Department of Ancient Languages ​​and Cultures at her university.

She died in Istanbul in March 2018 at the age of 96.

Darga was a member of the Türk Tarih Kurumu and a corresponding member of the German Archaeological Institute .
