The German Multiple Sclerosis Society (DMSG) represents the interests of people suffering from multiple sclerosis and organizes their social-medical follow-up care . It was founded in 1952 as an association of medical professionals.

organization

The association, based in Hanover, consists of registered associations : the federal association, 16 regional associations and 900 local contact groups. In 2017 it had a total of 43,602 registered members and employed 286 full-time employees. Your main task is to represent the interests of people with MS, including before the legislature and authorities. Furthermore, the DMSG is active in the initiation and financing of research projects as well as their coordination, such as the Germany-wide MS register initiated in 2001. It also provides a wide range of information on the topic of multiple sclerosis and the social platform MS Connect parallel to the regional self-help offers. As part of the representation of interests, she also develops concepts for social medical follow-up care for MS patients.

Important organs of the DMSG are the medical advisory board and the federal advisory board for people with MS. The former is made up of internationally recognized experts in the field of multiple sclerosis research and therapy. It represents the medical expert committee of the society. The Federal Advisory Board for MS Patients has the task of representing and contributing the interests of the patient population. In 1999, the Multiple Sclerosis Therapy Consensus Group of the German-speaking MS societies, under the leadership of the Medical Advisory Council, wrote consensus recommendations on immunomodulatory step therapy and updated them several times. These recommendations have now also been recognized as treatment guidelines by the German Society for Neurology (DGN). There were also recommendations for the treatment of symptoms of multiple sclerosis in 2018.

In contrast, the subdivision in Baden-Württemberg is called AMSEL ( Multiple Sclerosis Disease Action, State Association of the DMSG in Baden-Württemberg eV )

The Bavarian State Association maintains an MS specialist clinic, the Marianne Strauss Clinic, on Lake Starnberg with the Munich City Administration , the Upper Bavaria District and the Münchner Altenwohnstift eV .

From 1998 to 2011, Gottfried Milde was Federal Chairman and then Honorary President of the German Multiple Sclerosis Society.
