Mungeranie , alternatively known as Mungerannie Hotel or Mungerannie Station , is a hamlet with 63 residents in the Australian outback . Mungeranie is located on the Birdsville Track 204 km north of Marree in northeast South Australia . The closest town north is Birdsville, 313 km away, just across the Queensland border .
The name "Mungeranie" is the language of the local Aborigines borrowed, meaning "big, ugly face."
The hamlet consists of a hotel with the only fuel dispenser on the Birdsville Track and an airstrip. The Derwent River is right next to the hamlet. However, this is not a river, but a water hole fed by the Great Artesian Basin . The wider area Mungeranie is determined by the Strzelecki and Simpson deserts and the Sturts-Steinige desert .
