Pánuco is a municipality in the Mexican state of Zacatecas . The municipality covers an area of 587.6 km². In 2010, Pánuco had a population of 16,875 people. The administrative seat of the municipality is the Pánuco of the same name , while the largest place in the municipality is Pozo de Gamboa .
geography
The municipality of Pánuco is centrally located in the state of Zacatecas at an altitude between 1900 m and 2600 m . Almost two-thirds of it belongs to the physiographic province of the Mesa del Centro and a good third to the Sierra Madre Occidental . The municipality lies entirely in the endorheic hydrographic region of El Salado . Geologically, the municipality is dominated by alluvial soil (64%) with 18 % porphyry and 9% mica schist . The predominant soil types are Kastanozem with 48% of the municipal area , Calcisol with 24% and Phaeozem with 17% . Almost 70% of the community area is used for arable farming, a good 18% is covered by scrub and around 12% is pasture land.
The Municipio Pánuco borders the Municipios Calera , Fresnillo , Villa de Cos , Guadalupe , Vetagrande and Morelos .

In the 2010 census, 16,875 people in 4,177 residential units were counted in the municipality. Of these, 185 people were registered as speakers of an indigenous language , including 65 speakers of the Tepehuano and 61 speakers of the Nahuatl . About 6.7% of the population were illiterate. 5,805 inhabitants were registered as economically active, of which approx. 81% were men and approx. 2.7% were unemployed. About 14.6% of the population lived in extreme poverty.
