Muostakh Island ( Russian Остров Муостах Ostrow Muostakh Island ) is an island in the Laptev Sea on the east side of the Lena Delta . Located 40 km east-southeast of Tiksi , it belongs to Yakutia in Russia .
Location and geology
Geologically , Muostach belongs to the North Siberian lowlands . The separating waterway was created 2000 years ago.
The island is 7.5 km long and up to 500 m wide. At the southern tip, where a lighthouse marks the way into Tiksibucht, it continues in an interrupted strip of sand for 5.2 km. The polar climate causes the surrounding sea to freeze for almost nine months of the year between mid-October and mid-July. Storms and ice floes hit the coast . In the past, a weather station and a research station were operated on the island .
Massive soil erosion has been observed on Muostach . Over the past 60 years, the coastal sections examined have receded by an average of 1.8 m per year, and on the particularly exposed North Cape by 9.6 m per year. In the years 2010 to 2012 this value increased to 3.1 m per year. Development can mean the island's demise because 87% of the subsoil consists of ice formed in the ground. If the permafrost continues to thaw, the area of the island is also reduced. The volume loss from 1951 to 2010 is estimated at 34%. The area decreased by 24%.
