Murakami Kagaku ( Japanese 村上 華岳 ; born July 3, 1888 in Osaka ; died November 11, 1939 ) was a Japanese painter of the Nihonga direction in the Taishō and early Shōwa period .

life and work

Murakami was born as Takeda Shin'ichi ( 武田 震 一 ) and from 1903 attended the "City School for Arts and Crafts Kyōto" ( 京都 市立 美術 工 芸 学校 , Kyōto shiritsu bijutsu kōgei gakkō ). In 1904 he was inherited by the Murakami family. In 1906 he took his first exam and continued his studies at the same school. In 1907 he completed his training with the picture "The Bear" ( , Kuma ).

In 1908 Murakami submitted the picture “Donkey with Summer Flowers ” ( 驢 馬 に 夏 草 , Roba ni natsukusa ) to the exhibition of the Bunten Ministry of Culture , for which he received a third prize. In 1909 the " Municipal Painting School " ( 京都 市立 絵 画 専 門 学校 , Kyōto shiritsu kaiga semmon gakkō ) was founded in Kyoto , a place as a student at Murakami, together with Irie Hakō (1887–1948) and Sakakibara Shihō (1887–1971) received in the 2nd year. In 1911 Murakami was among the first to graduate from this school. He submitted his exam picture , “In February” ( 二月 の 頃 , Nigatsu no koro ), at the 5th Bunter exhibition and thus attracted attention. In 1916 he submitted the picture “Amidha” ( 阿 弥陀 之 図 , Amida no zu ), which received special attention.

In 1918 he founded, together with his painter friends Tsuchida Bakusen , Sakakibara and Ono Chikkyō (1889–1979), the "National Society for Creative Painting" ( 国画 創作 協会 , Kokuga Sōsaku Kyōkai ), which devoted all of its energy to the further development of the Nihonga style. His most famous work, "Female Nude" ( 裸 婦 図 , Rafu-zu ), was created during this time.

In 1923 Murakami moved to Ashiya ( Hyōgo Prefecture ) due to his poor health , but returned to his house in Hanakuma (Kobe) in 1927. Increasingly ill in recent years, he painted Buddhist subjects and landscapes.
