Murata Kokoku
Murata Kōkoku ( Japanese 村田 香 谷 , actually Murata Shuku (村田 叔), other artist names: Ransetsu (蘭 雪) and Tekiho (適 圃); born in Fukuoka in 1831 ; died October 8, 1912 ) was a Japanese Nanga painter -Direction of the late Edo and Meiji periods .
life and work
Murata Kōkoku was the son of Murata Toho, a minor nanga painter. Kōkoku studied first under his father, then under Nukina Kaioku , before he went to Nagasaki and under Nukina's teacher Hidaka Tetsuō (日 高 鉄 翁; 1791–1877) and there under Kinoshita Itsuun (木 下 逸雲; 1800–1868), the Chinese painter Xú Yŭtíng (徐 雨亭) and others further educated.
Kōkoku made three trips to China and trained there. He taught at the Kyōto Municipal School for handicrafts and handicrafts (京 都市 美術 工 芸 学校, Kyōto-shi bijutsu kōgei gakkō). His best work as an artist was his landscape paintings.
