life and work

Kaioku was the second son of a vassal of the Hachisuka in Awa Province , today's Tokushima Prefecture . He began studying calligraphy and painting at the Kanō School in Tokushima with Yano Norihiro (? –1799), and studied Buddhism on the Kōya-san . He traveled to Nagasaki and studied painting in the literary style there under Hidaka Tetsuō ( 日 高 鉄 翁 ; 1791–1877), the 14th abbot of the temple Shuntoku-ji ( 春 徳 寺 ). Kaioku then went to Edo and was taught by Nakai Chikuzan (1730-1804) in Confucianism . In addition, he dealt with the Chinese painting of the Ming Dynasty and Qing Dynasty and was influenced by artists such as Dong Qichang . Finally, Kaioku settled in Kyoto and taught Confucianism, but was also creative in calligraphy and painting.

Kaioku's pictures show elegance and are kept simple at the same time. One of his best-known works is entitled "Tempel Eigen im Herbst" ( 永 源 寺 秋景 図 , Eigenji shūkei to ); it is privately owned. Following the text on the edge of the picture, Kaioku painted the picture from the memory of a visit to the temple in Ōmi province 26 years ago , which is known for its autumn leaves.
