Murieston Castle

Murieston Castle is the ruin of a residential tower from the 16th century, about 3 km west of West Calder , west of Murieston Water at Murieston Castle Farm in the Scottish administrative unit West Lothian .

restoration

Murieston Castle was in ruins in the early 19th century and was then restored in the 1820s or 1830s. It was described as over-restored so that it had more of the character of a folly . The restoration was commissioned by John Keir , who bought the Wester Murieston property in 1819.

description

The castle was rectangular, the walls were made of rubble, and the building was two stories high. At the level of the first floor there is a turret without a roof that protrudes from the rest of the building. The Tower House is about 7 meters long (measured in a northwest-southeast direction) and 5 meters wide.

There is an outside staircase to the upper floor. A double entrance has a medallion with the coat of arms in the gusset .

Historic Scotland has listed Murieston Castle as a Category B Historic Building and is a Scheduled Monument .
