Murmelmühlenschanze

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Murmelmühlenschanze was a ski jumping hill in Johanngeorgenstadt in the Saxon Ore Mountains .

history

After the ski jump, which was built in 1908 below the Johanngeorgenstadt train station, could no longer be used, a new location was sought. Workers' athletes from Johanngeorgenstadt and the surrounding area built a new ski jump at the entrance to the Lehmergrund in the course of 1920. A southern slope was selected for this. The ceremonial inauguration, at which the jumping facility was named Murmelmühlenschanze , took place on January 15, 1921.

Due to the southern location of the site, however, there were problems from the beginning due to the early thawing of the snow and the associated snow insecurity.

After the winter sports club in Johanngeorgenstadt, not far from the train station in the Schwarzwassertal, built a new ski jump on December 30, 1923, which was named Hans-Heinz-Schanze in honor of a club member who fell in 1918 , the workers' athletes made an effort in collaboration with the Johanngeorgenstadt winter sports community about the construction of a new ski jump in a snow-sure location. They found a suitable building site on the north side of the Lehmergrund, diagonally opposite the Murmelmühlenschanze, which was then torn down. The inauguration of the new Lehmergrundschanze took place in 1931.

The location of the Murmelmühlenschante is still clearly visible in the area today.
