Murroes House

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Murroes House is a villa near the Scottish village of Wellbank in the Council Area Angus . In 1971 the structure was included in the Scottish monument lists in the highest monument category A.

history

Murroes House was built by the Fothringham family from Wester Powries , who had it built during the 16th century. The permanent house was expanded around the year 1600 . Presumably, however, it was never the ancestral home of the Fothringhams. Presumably in the course of the 17th century the family moved to Inverarity , where they had their ancestral seat, Fothringham House, built around 1740 and again in 1859 . In the 19th century, farm laborers lived in Murroes House. In 1942 the villa was restored. In the course of this, the tower was also increased. In the 1960s a wing was added on the south side.

description

Murroes House is about two kilometers southwest of Wellbank. There are architectural parallels to the nearby Gagie House . Its masonry consists of rubble from sandstone . The older, higher part has loopholes . The extension, which was built around 1600, is larger but lower. There you will find the two-winged entrance portal with a combat window . A stair tower with a conical roof emerges from the facade on the west side . The final roofs are covered with gray slate. The gable roof of the older component is designed with stepped gables . The newer component, however, closes with a hipped roof .
