Mury (song)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Mury (Walls) is a song composed by Polish singer Jacek Kaczmarski in 1978. It gained particular prominence through the Solidarność movement. The melody was taken from the song L'estaca by the Catalonian singer Lluís Llach , one of the most famous songs of the Catalonian Nova Cançó .

Story of Mury

Mury is one of Kaczmarski's most famous songs. It became the symbol of the opposition in the People's Republic of Poland , and was sung at demonstrations, meetings of opposition members and strikes in the 1980s.

Kaczmarski wrote the song to the tune of L'Estaca after receiving the recording from a friend. Ironically, it was also Kaczmarski's intention to criticize certain aspects of social movements that sometimes use works by artists - such as songs - for their own purposes. The refrain of Mury - Wyrwij murom zęby krat! - became the radio signal from Radio Solidarność. When used for political purposes, it was often forgotten that the song's ending was rather pessimistic - A mury rosły, rosły (the walls keep growing).

Disaffected by the repression of Solidarność by the state, Kaczmarski wrote the song "'Mury' 87 '" in 1987 to the same melody, the lyrics of which referred to the need for actions that go beyond singing and hoping.

In 2005, Mury was performed by Jean Michel Jarre together with the Gdańsk University Choir and the Polish Baltic Philharmonic at a concert on the 25th anniversary of Solidarność.

In 2010 Mury was voted in a Belarusian version in the course of the large demonstration in Minsk following the 2010 presidential election in Belarus . The translation into Belarusian comes from Andrei Chadanovich , who also intoned the song personally on Independence Square in Minsk . In 2014, Chadanovich organized a sound recording.

In 2020 the song rose to prominence when the song was recorded by the - later arrested - presidential candidate Sjarhej Zichanouski along with the group Kosmas . Then the song became the anthem in the election campaign of the presidential candidate Svyatlana Zichanouskaja , Zichanouski's wife.
