Jacek Marcin Kaczmarski (born March 22, 1957 in Warsaw , † April 10, 2004 in Gdansk ) was a Polish singer, poet and writer.

Life

Kaczmarski was known as the "Bard of Solidarność " because of his commitment to the fight against communist oppression in Poland . His protest songs criticized the regime and appealed to the tradition of patriotic resistance of the Polish people. He was best known for his songs with social and political references; for example Mury ( walls ) or Obława (driven hunt ).

Kaczmarski made his first appearance in 1977 at the Student Song Festival in Kraków , where he won first prize for his title Obława (driven hunt ). In 1979 he founded a songwriting trio with Przemysław Gintrowski and Zbigniew Łapiński . In 1980 he won the second prize at the Polish Song Festival in Opole for Epitafium dla Włodzimierza Wysockiego ( Epitaph for Vladimir Vysotsky ). After martial law was declared in 1981, Kaczmarski decided to emigrate. The trio with Gintrowski and Łapiński therefore broke up. Since 1984 he has worked at Radio Free Europe in Munich as an editor and journalist. He had his own show called A Quarter with Jacek Kaczmarski .

After the end of the communist regime in Poland, he returned in 1989 and together with his friend Zbigniew Łapiński gave concerts all over the country. The tour was recorded and published ( Live ); the album received a platinum record . For three other albums he received two gold and two platinum records. Other albums are titled Mury ( Walls ), Nasza klasa ( Our Class ), Raj ( Paradise ), Muzeum ( Museum ), Pochwała Łotrowstwa and Wojna Postu z Karnawałem ( The Struggle Between Carnival and Lent ). Kaczmarski was known not only for his politically motivated lyrics, but also for his characteristic guitar playing (very dynamic to aggressive) and his expressive performances. He played in front of a wide variety of audiences: from appearances in front of friends to large concert halls in Europe and America .

In 1995, Kaczmarski moved with his family to Australia , but visited Poland regularly for concerts and for the purpose of record marketing. In March 2002 he was diagnosed with esophageal cancer. Since he could not afford the necessary medical treatment in Australia, he returned to Poland, where a national fundraising campaign was organized by his fans. He died on April 10, 2004 in a hospital in Gdansk .
