Sjarhej Zichanouski ( Belarusian Сяргей Ціханоўскі , Russian Сергей Тихановский / Sergei Tichanovsky; born August 18, 1978 in Horki , Belarusian SSR , Soviet Union ) is a Belarusian video blogger and political activist , political activist . He has been a political prisoner in his home country since 2020 . He was sentenced to 18 years in prison in December 2021, and his five co-defendants were sentenced to 14 to 16 years in prison.

Life

Sjarhej Zichanouski grew up in Gomel , where he attended high school and graduated from the local university. He later opened night clubs in Gomel and Mazyr and organized concerts. He said he became a blogger by chance while talking to journalists about the bureaucratic hurdles he faced in his business activities. He became known for his YouTube videos in which he “ spoke to people in the regions, actually Lukashenko's regular voters, about corruption and dictatorship ”. He was arrested on May 29, 2020 following his announcement that he would run for the 2020 presidential election in Belarus . He was charged with preparing a serious breach of public order. The background to this was an unauthorized rally. Amnesty International has classified Zichanouski as a prisoner of conscience .

In his place, his wife Svyatlana Zichanouskaya ran for the election on August 9th. The electoral commission had confirmed their approval.

Sjarhej Zichanouski was tried in camera in Gomel on June 24, 2021 and sentenced on December 14 to 18 years imprisonment in a prison camp under harsh conditions for “preparing and organizing mass uprisings” . His wife disapproved of the guilty verdict against him and spoke of revenge on President Lukashenko's political opponents.
