In the 1930s the campus of the Belarusian State University , the government building and the main building of the Belarusian Pedagogical University were built. The then Leninplatz was built according to the plans of the architect Iosif Langbard and should serve as the main square of the city. In the 1960s, Lenin Square was massively expanded and took up an area of 7 hectares, making it the largest square in Europe. The square was given a rectangular shape and had a small green area in the center.
