The Roman Catholic Church of Saint Symeon and Saint Helena - also known as the Red Church - in the Belarusian capital Minsk is a neo-Romanesque red brick church. It is located in the center of the city in the immediate vicinity of Independence Square and is one of the most photographed buildings in the city and therefore one of its landmarks .

history

The church was built between 1906 and 1910 with the financial support of nobleman Edward Woyniłłowicz . The architectural design goes back to Tomasz Pajzderski from Warsaw. The church's name refers to the patrons of the children Woyniłłowiczs - the children had died young.

During communist times, the striking building served as a cinema. After the Catholic community took over the church again in 1990, it was quickly restored to its original state.

During demonstrations for the resignation of President Alexander Lukashenko , around 100 people were temporarily detained in the church on August 26, 2020 by the Belarusian police OMON .
