The Independence Boulevard or Independence Prospectus ( Belarusian Праспэкт Незалежнасьці ; Praspekt Nesaleschnaszi ) is a prospect in the Belarusian capital Minsk , which crosses the city from the center to the northeast.
Until 1991 the street was named Lenin Boulevard and was laid out on the former location of Soviet Street and Borisovsky Lane . After the Second World War there were only 10 buildings left on Soviet Street and a new, larger and wider main street was laid out. Until 2005 the street was named after the printer Francysk Skaryna . From 2004 to 2015 it was on the tentative list of the UNESCO World Heritage in Belarus .
On Independence Boulevard are the main squares of the city: the Independence Square , the October Square , the Victory Square , the Jakub Kolas Square and the Kalininplatz . In addition, on the street there are the Government Building , the Cathedral of Saints Simeon and Saint Helena , the Belarusian State University of Physical Education, the main building of the Belarusian National Technical University , the National Hydro-Meteorological Observatory, the main building of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus as well as a small number of residential buildings.
