It was the first single from their gold- winning album Silk Electric . The title helped Ross to her twelfth and final Grammy nomination in the category "Best Female R&B Vocal Performance". On the B-side to Muscles , the title I Am Me is included. Musically, Muscles is an R&B and soul song.

In the music video, Diana Ross dreams of a bodybuilder in bed . In one scene, Diana Ross flies over a landscape, then it turns out that the landscape was the body of the bodybuilder.
