The interspinous muscles ( Latin for "inter- spinal process muscles ", singular interspinous muscles ) or inter- spinal muscles are short skeletal muscles of the spine that connect the spinous processes of adjacent vertebrae on both sides of the interspinous ligament . Together with the spinal muscle , they belong within the "local back muscles" to the interspinous system ( Systema interspinale ) or the medial tract of the erector spinae muscle .
Depending on the location, a distinction is made between three sections:
- The five interspinous lumborum muscles are located in the area of the lumbar spine .
- The thoracic interspinous muscles are usually only weakly developed in some places due to the tile-like overlap of the spinous processes. They are located in the thoracic spine between the first two thoracic vertebrae , sometimes also between the second and third and eleventh and twelfth.
- The six interspinous cervical muscles are located in the area of the cervical spine from the second to the seventh cervical vertebra .
The innervation is provided by the dorsal rami of the spinal nerves C1-Th3 and Th11-L5.
In ungulates the interspinales muscles are interspersed strong stringy and form planar belts , which as ligaments interspinalia be referred to. In the carnivores , however, they are muscular and extend from the posterior cervical to the anterior lumbar vertebrae.
