The peron (a) eus tertius muscle ( Latin for "third fibula muscle "), also called fibularis tertius muscle , is a skeletal muscle of the lower leg . It is a splitting off of the extensor digitorum longus muscle , the tendon of which reaches the outer edge of the foot .

In the predators , the muscle is completely absent. In the horse it is purely sinewy ( Tendo femorotarseus ) and part of the tension saw construction .

function

The peronaeus tertius muscle is involved in the dorsiflexion of the ankle . So it causes the "pulling up" of the foot. It also supports the lifting of the outer edge of the foot ( pronation ).

In animals - with the exception of predators and horses - it acts as a flexor of the ankle and auxiliary extensor of the knee.

Varieties

In 10.5% of all cases the peronaeus tertius muscle is completely absent in humans.
