The quadratus lumborum muscle ( Latin for "square lumbar muscle") is one of the deep abdominal muscles . It fills the area between the back of the iliac crest and the 12th rib. It is four-sided and it is wider at the bottom than at the top. The muscle is a continuation of the transversus abdominis muscle .

The muscle is covered behind by the deep sheet of the thoracolumbar fascia , in front by the fascia transversalis and the peritoneum . Together with the psoas major muscle , it forms the floor of the lumbar fossa ( fossa lumbalis ). The iliohypogastric nerve runs between the kidney bed and the quadratus lumborum muscle , before it continues into the abdominal wall between the transversus abdominis muscle and the obliquus internus abdominis muscle .

function

The quadratus lumborum muscle tilts the trunk to one side and lowers the 12th rib. In this way it forms a counter-traction to the diaphragm, which is important for stabilizing the lower ribs during inhalation. It is an auxiliary muscle for exhalation ( expiration ).
