The musculus thyrohyoideus ("thyroid cartilage-hyoid bone muscle", formerly musculus thyreohyoideus ) is a pair of narrow, striated muscle that pulls from the oblique line ( linea obliqua ) of the thyroid cartilage ( cartilago thyroidea ) of the larynx to the large horn of the hyoid bone . Functionally, it is the continuation of the sternothyroid muscle coming from the sternum .
The thyrohyoid muscle belongs to the lower hyoid bone muscles ( infrahyal muscles ). He pulls the hyoid bone down and is involved in the act of swallowing . The innervation occurs via the ramus thyrohyoideus of the superior radix from the ansa cervicalis profunda , a nerve loop of the cervical plexus .
