Neck muscles of man
origin
Back of the sternum (manubrium sterni)
approach
Thyroid cartilage ( cartilago thyroidea )
function
pulls the hyoid bone down (fixation of the hyoid bone), shifts the larynx and hyoid bone downwards
Innervation
Ansa cervicalis (plexus cervicalis) and C4

The sternothyroid muscle ("sternum thyroid cartilage muscle", obsolete musculus sternothyreoideus ) is a pair of narrow, striated muscle that pulls from the so-called "handle" ( manubrium sterni ) of the breastbone to the thyroid cartilage ( cartilago thyroidea ) of the larynx . Functionally, it continues in the thyrohyoid muscle that pulls to the hyoid bone and thus belongs to the lower hyoid bone muscles ( infrahyal muscles ).

The muscle pulls the larynx and hyoid bone down and is involved in the act of swallowing . The innervation takes place via the ansa cervicalis profunda , a nerve loop of the neck plexus , and via direct branches from the spinal cord segment C4.
