history

The Museo Archeologico Regionale was opened in 1968 and shows finds from the area around Agrigento. The museum was rebuilt, but includes parts of a former Cistercian monastery ; From this a window with zigzag ornaments has been preserved. The main entrance to the museum is through the old cloister .

Exhibits

The museum's 17 halls provide an overview of the archaeological finds in the area:

  • An original Telamon from the Olympieion is one of the first representations of people at a temple and is - unusual for the time - composed of several stones.
  • A collection of Attic vases from the 5th and 6th centuries BC. BC is also one of the treasures of the museum; a bowl shows one of the first images of the triskele , which is now a symbol of Sicily.
  • Of the few sculptures that have survived from ancient Akragas (old name of Agrigento), a marble ephebe is on display. The imbalance of the body between the head and the limbs is striking.
  • The sarcophagus collection also includes a rare children's sarcophagus made of alabaster .
  • There are only copies of Sant'Angelo Muxaro's gold treasure in the museum; the originals are in the possession of the British Museum in London.
