The Museo Chileno de Arte Precolombino (Chilean Museum of Pre-Columbian Art ) is a museum in Santiago de Chile that houses a comprehensive collection of art objects from Central and South America from before the European discovery . It is one of the most important museums for this cultural area. Some of the exhibits are over 5000 years old and are often animal or human figures made of various materials. There are also mummies , clay pots and weaving .

history

The museum was built between 1805 and 1807 as the palace of the Royal Customs Administration of Santiago . After Chile gained independence, the building was used as a national library and by the judiciary, among other things. After a fire and a corresponding renovation, it was opened in 1981. In 2014, a new, underground, two-storey museum building was opened according to the design by the Chilean architect Smiljan Radic . The new building covers 1400 m² and, in addition to exhibition space, also includes rooms for the conservation of holdings and new acquisitions of the museum. The design ensured that the external impression of the ensemble, which has been a listed building since 1969, was retained.

Collections

The collections go back to the private collection of Sergio Larraín García-Moreno. Temporary exhibitions are also held in the museum . The museum also houses a library for research purposes.
