Reconstruction of the Argentinosaurus huinculensis in the Museo Municipal Carmen Funes

The Museo Municipal Carmen Funes in Plaza Huincul in the province of Neuquén , Argentina is a natural history museum founded in 1984, known for its dinosaur exhibits , in particular for a replica and bones of the Argentinosaurus huinculensis (found in 1989 eight kilometers east of the city), the largest sauropod ever found . The museum was founded by the paleontologist Rodolfo Coria and named after Carmen Funes .

The province of Neuquén in Patagonia, in which the museum is located, is not only known for its oil finds, but also as the richest dinosaur site in South America. The first dinosaur in South America was found here in 1883.

Other exhibits are the first known sauropod embryos, which were found in Patagonia ( Auca Mahuevo ) in a fossil clutch that consisted of at least 1 km² of thousands of fossilized eggs, almost 40 of which contained fragments of embryonic tissue. There is also a replica of Giganotosaurus carolinii , the largest predatory dinosaur ever found from 1993, which is on display in the City Museum of Villa El Chócon . Coria was the excavator of the Giganotosaurus . He was also one of the two first descriptors (with José Fernando Bonaparte ) of Argentinosaurus . There is also a replica of the largest ichthyosaur ever found in South America ( Caypullisaurus bonapartei ).

The museum also has exhibits on local history, ethnology and archeology.
