National Museum of Slavery in Luanda

The Museu Nacional da Escravatura is a state museum dedicated to slavery in Luanda , Angola . It deals with the slave trade organized by Europeans during the Portuguese colonial era in Angola.

location

The museum is located in Município Belas , around 20 km southwest of the city center near the national road EN100. It was set up in a chapel on the Morro da Cruz hill, facing the sea. There is also a pier for passenger ferries with connections to the port of Luanda.

history

In the 18th century, Admiral Álvaro de Carvalho Matoso had a two-story, square building built on the Cross Hill for the transport of slaves overseas, next to a small chapel from the 17th century - the Capela da Casa Grande - in which the prisoners were baptized before the crossing . It served as a slave warehouse until the slave trade was officially banned in Portugal in 1836. However, it was not until February 25, 1869, that all slaves were declared free. The Slavery Museum was founded on December 7, 1997. Its first director was João Lourenço .

Palmatória

The evidence object consists of only 60 pieces. These include iron handcuffs, iron chains, ankle balls weighing up to 30 kg with which the slaves were immobilized, punishment instruments such as palmatórias - wooden instruments with small holes that were used to punch the palms of the punished, and 17th century hunting weapons such as lances and arrows , Iron pots, a baptismal font, paintings, and scaled-down models of the ships with which the slaves were brought to America. Inscribed memorial stones are also on display, including one with a quote from Martin Luther King .

Visitors

The museum attracts around 4,000 visitors a month, mainly schoolchildren and students.
