The museum.ebensee (formerly Ebensee Local History Museum and Heimathaus ) is a local history museum in the market town of Ebensee in Upper Austria .

history

The museum is located in the former Verwesamt, which existed in the building from 1605 to 1852. The administrator was the director of the salt works , administered the forests, was mayor, commanded the police and held the function of a judge. The former building of the salt works is a listed building. The renaissance ceilings that were removed during the renovation in 2008 have been preserved.

The focus of the museum, which opened in 1974, is the subject of salt production, the history of the saltworks and forestry. The exhibition shows the work in the salt works and in the brewhouse . The objects include a piece of the wooden pipeline that transported brine from Hallstatt to Ebensee over a distance of 40 kilometers . Wood was needed in large quantities to fire the brewhouse.

The museum was redesigned on the occasion of the Upper Austrian provincial exhibition in 2008 on the topic of the Salzkammergut . The exhibition "Home - Heaven & Hell" was housed on the second floor. It deals with the topic of migration . The migration to the Salzkammergut began the influx of wood and Saline professionals since the early 17th century, started as the production of salt in Ebensee Saline. Another phase of migration is immigration after the end of the Second World War. The emigration for reasons of faith affected, for example, the rural population , the Protestants who were deported to Transylvania in the course of the Counter-Reformation in the 18th century , and the expulsion of Jews during the Nazi era. "Home - Heaven & Hell" had 14,000 visitors during the state exhibition.

The museum shows local history topics such as traditional costumes, costumes of the Ebenseer Fetzenfasching , the historical furnishings of a school classroom up to the custom of singing birds with catch cages, which is still allowed in the Salzkammergut. The topic of tourism since the beginning of skiing on the Feuerkogel is also presented.

In the attic there is a collection of Glöckler's caps that have been worn in Ebensee since the 19th century during the Glöcklerlauf on the eve of Epiphany , the Raunacht .
