The Altomünster Museum is a special church history museum on the Order of the Birgit and its last German branch in Altomünster ( Dachau district ) in Bavaria. It opened in 1997. It has evolved into a small cultural center for exhibitions and events.

history

In 1989 a museum and local history association was established in Altomünster, which in 1994 took over two houses in need of renovation on a long lease, renovated them in-house and opened them in time for the 500th anniversary of the takeover of the monastery by the Order of Birgit in 1497. The planned second construction phase - the establishment of a local history museum for the Altomünster market - was abandoned and instead a museum gallery was set up for temporary exhibitions. The museum developed into the nucleus of a cultural center in which many temporary exhibitions and other cultural events take place. The existence of the museum, run on a voluntary basis by the museum association, was secured in the long term in 2013 through an agreement of purpose with the market town.

In 2001 the museum was awarded the Bavarian Museum Prize.

exhibition

The theme of the permanent exhibition in the museum is the history of the Birgitten Order in Europe and its founder, St. Birgitta of Sweden. In addition to the monastery in Altomünster, which is more than 500 years old, the mother monastery in Sweden and a monastery in England are also discussed. This documentation has historical value, as there are only two nuns in the monastery (as of 2014) and the continued existence of the women's convent is therefore more than questionable.
