Briner and Kern collection

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Briner and Kern Collection was housed in the Briner and Kern Museum in the town hall of Winterthur from 1970 to October 31, 2014 . The paintings of the Jakob Briner Foundation have been exhibited in a separate wing of the Oskar Reinhart Museum since October 2016 .

One focus of the museum was the collection of Jakob Briner (1882–1967), a customs officer, which mainly comprised 17th century Dutch paintings . He bequeathed his collection in the form of a foundation to the city of Winterthur in the will that a museum should emerge from it. Shortly before his death, he learned that his collection could be housed in the Winterthur town hall , where it could be seen until the museum closed on October 31, 2014.

The second part was the donation from Emil S. Kern (1914–2014). It contained portrait miniatures from all eras from the 16th to the 19th century, which Kern bequeathed to the city of Winterthur in 1998. The collection is located in the Oskar Reinhart Museum , where rooms for the collection will be renovated after 2015. In 2018, the Jakob Briner Foundation was canceled after it donated its collection to the Kunstverein Winterthur .
