Emanuel de Witte (* around 1617 in Alkmaar , † 1692 in Amsterdam through suicide ) was a Dutch painter . As the son of a teacher, he joined the painters' guild of Alkmaar in 1636 , soon afterwards went to Rotterdam and worked in Delft from around 1641 to 1649 . Then he then took up residence in Amsterdam.

Emanuel de Witte was an excellent architectural painter who mainly painted the interiors of Reformed and Catholic churches in Holland , less often views of streets and squares. Pictures of him, whose main attraction lies in the fine lighting effect, can be found in the museums of Amsterdam, Brussels , Berlin ( The Synagogue of Amsterdam ), Braunschweig , Hamburg , Rotterdam ( The Amsterdam Fish Market ) and Weimar .

After a life darkened by worries, arguments, lawsuits, provocations, humiliations and the early death of two wives, he committed suicide in Amsterdam in 1692.
