history

The Museum St. Johann in Tirol was founded in 1969 by a number of committed local researchers from St. Johann and initially housed in a room of the old municipal office. This building from 1724, the " Riester'sche Priesterhaus ", was a reformatory for priests with an improper way of life in the 18th century . In 1994 the house was completely restored and since then it has housed the museum and gallery of the market town of St. Johann in Tirol . In 1997, the St. Johann in Tirol Museum and Culture Association was founded, which has since taken care of the museum, the gallery and the archive on behalf of the municipality of St. Johann in Tirol. The association brings regional identity to life with a wide range of cultural and historical features and the history of St. Johann and the Leukental.

2004 was an underground connection to the former farm buildings of the priest house, the so-called "wash Häusl", to be built. Today, a glass cube with a spiral staircase leads to the underground connecting room. This newly developed area contains the exhibition focus "rock rich - myth and experience of the Kaiser Mountains".
