Helmut Rehm grew up in Hall in Tirol and graduated from the Oberrealschule in Innsbruck in 1930. From 1935 to 1939 he studied as a master student with Professor Herbert Boeckl at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna . After the war he taught at the Kunstgewerbeschule in Innsbruck until 1948. Some of his most famous students were Wilfried Kirschl , Franz Pöhacker and Anton Tiefenthaler . From 1950 he devoted himself exclusively to art and undertook numerous study trips, first through Europe (Italy, France, Belgium, the Netherlands and Denmark), later to Arab and African countries (Turkey, Syria, Lebanon, Egypt, Libya, Tunisia, Sudan, Ethiopia and Saudi Arabia). This is where his most important pictures and drawings were created. A series of exhibitions in his home country, in France, Germany, Italy, Saudi Arabia and the USA pay tribute to the work of Helmut Rehm.

His wife was the portrait painter and book illustrator Maria Rehm (1915–2002).
