The Museum de Oude Wolden (MOW for short) is an art museum in Bellingwolde in the province of Groningen in the Netherlands .

Collection and exhibitions

The museum focuses on the cultural history and art of the region. The collection consists mainly of cultural and historical objects from Westerwolde and Oldambt from the 19th and early 20th centuries, works of art by the magical-realistic painter Lodewijk Bruckman and the Groningen artist collective De Ploeg . The museum has a permanent exhibition with paintings by Lodewijk Bruckman, long-term temporary exhibitions and a monthly small presentation with works by regional artists. In 2003 the museum organized an exhibition to mark the 85th anniversary of the De Ploeg collective .

The Museum de Oude Wolden is located on Hoofdweg in the village of Bellingwolde in East Groningen, near the German border. The village is located in the transition area of ​​the Reiderland (today as part of the Oldambt ) in the north and Westerwolde in the south.

The museum is located in the back of a former mansion that was destroyed in World War II. In 1977 the building was expanded with a new wing for 150,000 guilders. In 2011 and 2012 the museum was rebuilt, the building was renovated and received a new glass facade. The museum reopened on September 28, 2012.

financing

The museum was originally subsidized by the former Bellingwedde Municipality , which funded 95% of the budget and owned the collection. In 2010 the community announced its intention to support the museum financially for fifteen years. In 2017 the museum continued its independent operation. The municipality of Bellingwedde merged with the municipality of Westerwolde in 2018 .

The museum had 1,965 visitors in 2012, 4,800 in 2013, and almost 6,000 in 2018.
