The Museum of Everyday Culture is a cultural-historical museum in Waldenbuch Castle in Baden-Württemberg . As a branch of the State Museum of Württemberg , it is one of the most important folklore museums in the German-speaking region.

Story and concept

The museum has existed as an independent institution since 1989/90. The folklore collection presented by the Württemberg State Museum can be traced back to the holdings of the former State Trade Museum in Stuttgart.

collection

The thematic breadth of the folklore collection of the Landesmuseum Württemberg covers the entire spectrum of everyday objects, " folk art " and things of everyday use. The objects cover a period from the 16th century to the present day. The regional focus is on the Württemberg region . Topics are: worlds of work and goods, worlds of images and worldviews, belief and superstition, clothing and disguise, advertising and branded goods, folk and amateur art, worlds of living. The upheavals from the pre-industrial to the industrial and post-industrial era are reflected in the collection.

Permanent exhibition

The exhibition area covers 2500 m² on three floors. From 2010 to 2015, the entire exhibition will be redesigned and modernized in sections.

Leaps in time

View into the "Zeitsprunghalle"

Opened in 2011, this part of the exhibition is one of the new attractions in the museum. In the time leaps, a historical everyday object is juxtaposed with a modern one. Under a common umbrella term, the two supposedly very different objects reveal unexpected parallels. United in the term “prestige”, for example , the curators juxtapose a magnificent traditional costume wheel cover from the 19th century with the rim of a modern luxury sports car.

Living worlds

Opened at the end of 2012, the living worlds are the newest part of the permanent exhibition. In a documentary and analytical way, this exhibition deals with developments and changes in the area of living from the 18th century to the present day.

Deer, princes, forest stories

In this part of the permanent exhibition, the history of Waldenbuch Castle as a ducal hunting lodge is discussed. It was the center of the ducal hunts in Württemberg until the 19th century. Magnificent deer antlers, weapons, hunting equipment and other, sometimes strange accessories decorate the exhibition room.

Life is work

In this part of the exhibition, forms of pre- and early industrial work are thematized and the development from agriculture to the beginnings of industrialization in Württemberg.

My piece of everyday life

The interactive exhibition "My piece of everyday life"

“My piece of everyday life” is a participatory exhibition project in which the museum is developing a small exhibition of everyday things in short projects together with various groups to show their everyday life. This included young people, single parents from Esslingen, people from health professions and employees of waste management companies in the Böblingen district.

Special exhibitions

From the end of October 2019 to the beginning of July 2020 the special exhibition “Adieu Plastic Bags!” Will run, where the positive and negative facets of plastic bags are shown.
