A garden culture path is a horticultural offer available in cities and municipalities . Private, municipal, social or commercial offers are linked and jointly made known and accessible to a broad audience. The respective municipality emphasizes the horticultural characteristics of their community.

Concept and implementation

The idea was developed by the Deutsche Gartenbau-Gesellschaft 1822 eV (DGG) and, as an essential part of the Local Agenda 21 project, is intended to network the citizens, administrations, organizations and companies of a municipality who are involved in the gardening sector and to network the existing horticultural offers and initiatives link together to form a garden culture path. Private gardens and parks as well as public green spaces, school gardens and nature-oriented play areas for children, open spaces in gardeners and tree nurseries , adventure gardens from nature and environmental protection organizations and similar locations can be part of this. Which and how many individual stations can be connected to each other through the local garden culture trail ultimately depends on the respective local ideas and conditions. Each municipality can and should set its own priorities and accents that are adapted to the circumstances.

In addition to initiating further activities, the linking of private and public green oases in cities and communities to a garden culture path should also create new dimensions for the exchange of horticultural information. Networking leads to a new collaboration between the public sector and citizens. Hobby gardeners can not only show other nature and plant lovers their gardens, but also pass on their knowledge and experience, and allotment gardening associations have the opportunity to present their work and encourage new citizens to participate or imitate them. A garden culture path is intended to create the basis for a new type of communication in the countryside and to promote environmentally conscious gardening that benefits people and nature alike. In this project, the DGG cooperates closely with the Gartennetz Deutschland eV and has already implemented eleven horticultural paths.

Listing of the garden culture trails

  • German Garden Culture Path - Fulda (Hesse)

The first garden culture trail was launched in Fulda in 2000 by the DGG as a model and as a cornerstone for a long-term garden agenda program. Building on the extremely positive experiences gained here, the DGG aimed to introduce the garden culture trail nationwide.

Contribution of the DGG

The Deutsche Gartenbau-Gesellschaft 1822 eV supports cities and communities in setting up and marketing the garden culture trail. The aim of the DGG as a licensor is to bring garden, people, nature and the environment into harmony with one another through a central project, whereby the importance of the elements garden and park for the quality of life of an individual should be emphasized. The licensor would like to contribute through guidance, support and mediation to ensure that a network of individual commitments is possible and a separate communication level is created, especially at the level of cities and municipalities. A one-time fee of € 500 is charged for the license; the municipality is thus free of charge for five years as a member of the German Horticultural Society 1822 eV
